Summertime blues, pinks, oranges…

I hope you’re all having a good summer, whatever the weather throws at you. Photographers are an odd bunch as we don’t generally like bright sunlight for image-making as colours are bleached and shadows hard. But, you work with what you’ve got and personally I can make use of shadowlines and of sun shining through foliage and grasses. And sometimes the heat inspires a colourful composition such as the one above. This is a composite image of shots taken during a recent trip to Porthcurno in the far west of Cornwall. I’ve combined peeling paint from the side of a boat, abandoned timber and wild plants in this shot and I love the vibrant colours.

While in Cornwall I rediscovered the pleasure in straight landscape photography too. Having discovered a field of barley I revisited it on a very misty afternoon and lost a couple of hours making images through the crop. Here are a couple of my favourites.

This part of Cornwall was magical. It was beautifully quiet in June and the fields were lush with crops and grasses. I was lucky enough to visit the Minack Theatre for a gig, with the sea in the background and a little drizzle just to remind us we were in Cornwall. Still, that’s what waterproofs are for and a glass of something sparkling took the edge off the weather. Thoroughly recommended if you can get there.

Virtual Exhibition

I’m a member of an online photographers’ community called FYV run by the brilliant Doug Chinnery and Valda Bailey - please do check them both out as they’re both highly talented photographers working in abstract expressionist photography. They’re also both fantastic educators and supporters of us mere mortals and recently they set up a virtual exhibition of members’ work. You can visit the exhibition here and see the work we’re all doing. Click on the ‘Guided Tour’ button to be taken through the virtual gallery. You can pause the tour if you want a closer look and some of the images are up for sale. My piece ‘Crossing Tides’ is included, seen above.

Bath Contemporary Art Fair

I’m really pleased to say that I’ll be at Bath Contemporary Art Fair every month until November. This is a brilliant art market and is now back at Green Park Station in Bath following the improvement works to the roof. The next one is Sunday August 13th and as we’re under cover it doesn’t matter if it rains so I hope to see you there.

Solo Exhibition

Finally, I’ve been thrilled with the response to my exhibition at Burdall’s Yard. There’s still time to see it until August 25th. Several pieces have sold and it’s generated interest from other galleries so do watch this space for more news. I hope you’ve managed to see it - it’s a lovely arts venue and has lots going on so do pop in for a coffee.

Thanks for reading, please get in touch here if you’d like any more information or have any queries. Meanwhile, enjoy the rest of summer.
