Spring is here (at last)…

It may be intermittent, but it is sunny as I write this and I hope you’re beginning to see some better light wherever you are.

Magnolias are a - sometimes fleeting - signpost that the season is changing and the tryptych above is my attempt to get right in amongst the glorious bowls of fragile colour.

It’s lucky that the days are brightening as April has lots in store for me on the photography front.

Firstly I’m really pleased to have had an image chosen for the White Chalk Gallery open exhibition. This is a lovely gallery in Devizes run by Bryony Cox and the exhibition runs from the 4th to the 20th of April. I’ll be at the gallery on April 6th between 2pm and 4pm for a ‘Meet the Artists’ event.

Bryony chose one of my perennial favourites to include. Landscape on the Side of a Boat was taken in Clevedon in 2022 and remains one of my most popular images. Please visit this lovely Gallery if you’re in Devizes, the exhibition is beautiful.

Next up it’s the start of the season for the Bath Contemporary Artists Fair on April 14th at Green Park Station in Bath. This is such a great event featuring over 50 artists from all genres. I’ll have a booth every month this season, having taken the decision to slim down the number of markets I do and concentrate on art fairs and open studio events. I change the images I show each month and I’ve always got a selection of greetings cards. I love doing this fair and chatting to the other stallholders and to customers. Really looking forward to getting back out there!

Finally for April I’m thrilled to be involved in ‘Delicious Women’ at One Two Five Gallery in Bath between the 19th and 21st April. This has been organised by the rather wonderful Carole Waller who makes sublime clothing and scarves, each one unique. These are investment pieces to cherish! Joanne Rutter is bringing her ceramics including some amphora pots for the garden and Gill Clement will be showing pieces from her jewellery collection. Carole also runs workshops and her students will be displaying some of their work as well. Last but not least Raphael’s Med Deli will be with us - delicious olive oils, spreads, dips with a Mediterranean twist. This promises to be a fun and delicious weekend.

In amongst all of this, I’m curating two exhibitions for Bath Photographic Society. We have a permanent exhibition at the Royal United Hospital in Bath which has just been moved into the new Dyson Cancer Centre under the theme ‘Land, Water, Sky’. The members really excelled themselves with their work which has been newly framed and hung ready for opening this month. Having lost my dear sister to cancer last autumn it was a joy to be able to bring some beauty to this centre, which is set to be a beacon of excellence in the South West.

The second event is our annual exhibition, which is at St Michael’s Church in Broad Street in Bath from April 22nd - 27th. There will be an eclectic selection of work, from exquisite nature photography to more contemporary abstract images (guess where I am…) and as a bonus the church runs an excellent cafe.

Meanwhile I’ve been learning so much from my colleagues at FYV, the online community for creative photographers. The image below is from a couple of days ago and uses many of the techniques I’ve been absorbing. Things seem to be getting more abstract! Watch this space.

Next month it will be Bear Flat Open Studios - keep an eye out for more on that. But meanwhile thanks for reading, please get in touch here - I’d love to hear from you.
